Why You Need It

Shopify's live shipping rates allocate one package dimension to send off to a shipping carrier. If you only fulfill orders using one box size, this usually won't impact you. For the majority of stores who ship using a variety of box sizes, your customers won't be charged the right price for shipping, leaving you with increased abandoned carts or paying out of pocket for the difference in shipping cost.

Major shipping carriers charge for shipping based on the dimensional weight of a package; a theoretical weight is estimated based on the length, width, and height of the parcel. The final shipping cost is based on the parcel's dimensional weight or physical weight, whichever is greater.
